the 'dailies' project: in autumn 2014, Gavin began a durational project, writing a text each day to send to Elizabeth. the project had simple rules - something had be sent each day (whatever else happened), & each text had to include something overheard, & some found text, as well as original writing (often using assemblage methods). (this project followed on from a similarly durational daily text & sound recording project made for John Cage's centenary, which can be found here).

early 'dailies' were text only:
however, it began to make sense to try & counterpoint text against image; dailies began to incorporate photographic images by joanne bonney:
while some images were used straight, others were cropped & otherwise manipulated by Gavin:
a special christmas edition followed, which used text & image derived from Gawain & the Green Knight; this stands somewhat separate from the Map You Make project, but can be downloaded here. a second christmas edition also based on Gawain was created December-January 2015.
after this point, while some photographic images remained by Joanne, for example:

more frequently images by Elizabeth were used (often similarly cropped & manipulated). in addition, some of the source lexicon subjected to various creative collage, assemblage & similar process to make new texts by Gavin were also by Elizabeth:
many dailies now came as triptychs or multiple panels:
from this point on, although the dailies were still principally created by Gavin, they began to become in many senses a more collaborative effort, or at least more conversational in practice. elements of discussion about the dailies began to be more common, & seeds for a more truly collaborative project were sown. this & other elements mentioned in brief below are exploring in greater detail in the collaborations page for this project.
the dailies evolved though various approaches to what they were doing; some were made as video pieces, others as interactive documents opening text/image pages online (this will be reactivated soon); however, the idea of establishing a resonance between text & image soon led to conversations about extending this cross-vibration by other means, & various subsequent dailies were sent with a soundfile to be listened to whilst reading the text-image. another sound concept was explored by including 'sound text' inside the dailies themselves - descriptions of or directions for making sound, similar to text scores, which in fact is what these texts have become - both for the Map You Make project & for a piece for Trio Atem:
the final & fairly obvious extension was to transfer some of the ideas, concepts, images, sounds & texts into more physical materials; with many of the texts exploring haptic ideas, & touching on of identity, gender & referencing daily events & politics, as well as many other things, using the dailies as the basis for an installation seemed to make sense - the Map You Make project was born.
